Antenatal Yoga
Antenatal Yoga is yoga which has been specially adapted for the needs of
pregnant women. It is not advisable for women who have not been used to
practising yoga, to join a general yoga class when pregnant. Some teachers don't
mind, but the woman will not benefit as much as she would if she was in a
specific class for pregnancy. Whereas antenatal yoga is gentle, non-strenuous
and absolutely safe.
Antenatal yoga classes teach exercises, relaxation and breathing techniques to
help you cope with pregnancy, childbirth and life with your new baby. Previous
experience of yoga is not necessary.
Extravagant claims are made about the benefits of practising antenatal yoga.
There are said to be advantages during pregnancy, such as
better breathing and circulation;
improved posture which will improve the way you carry your baby.
There are also advantages during labour
encourages your baby to be positioned optimally for easy delivery;
postural awareness will help you find good positions in labour.
